Dolphin or Dorado fishing in Guatemala? Not to worry the "Dolphin" we are referring to is the fish(dorado), not the mammal. On the USA East Coast they are called "Dolphin", on the West Coast USA and South Pacific they call them " Mahi Mahi" and in Latin America they are called " Dorado". As a kid I spent six years fishing the South Pacific and Mahi Mahi was a valuable change from the routine tuna we caught off the coast. Then we moved to Florida and the name went from "Mahi Mahi" to "Dolphin" and the game was now "Dolphin Fishing". Arguably the best name is "Dorado", as there is less confusion and you are less likely to offend anyone when you say you went Dorado Fishing, vs. "Dolphin fishing" which tends to get people a bit upset or at least curious. Being familiar with Dolphin fishing since I was a kid growing up in the Florida keys we easily adopted the new name and have always referred to them as Dolphin, and Dolphin Fishing is one of the most exciting and rewarding fishing you can do.
Summer time in Florida means time to get set up for Dolphin-Dorado fishing and now that I am living in Guatemala and am running the Fat Cat, Dolphin-Dorado Fishing in Guatemala is still one of my favorite types of fishing. This time of the year is great for Dolphin-Dorado fishing in Guatemala as it is rainy season and the Dolphin-Dorado are usually found around the color break off the coast at about ten miles. A Key thing when Dolphin-Dorado Fishing in Guatemala is to be ready with spinning gear and bare hooks with cut bait ready. Then the trick is to get the school around the boat, always keep one fish in the water and cast with the cut bait. Off Guatemala the Dolphin-Dorado are always running and seem to have a better place to go, so you have to be fast, if you do it right in about ten minutes of Dolphin-Dorado Fishing you will have about eight to ten fish in the box, and the reward is in the meal!
