Fins and Feathers Guatemala
July of 2005 Tim Choate the owner of the legendary Fins and Feathers of Guatemala sent a letter to all his loyal customers explaining that he was shutting down his resort. Tim's reasons for shutting down the resort can be and will be debated for a long time, and in some ways are a reflection of what not to do when doing business in a foreign country. However nothing can diminish the tremendous contribution to Guatemalan sail fishing made by Tim Choate and his fishing resort Fins and Feathers. No other single person has had more influence on a specific fishery than Tim Choate for Guatemala Sail fishing. Tim opened a resort and unleashed a new industry, one which did not exist before he came. When Tim Choate closed down Fins and Feathers, while the legal battles over the sale and ownership raged on so did the fishing.
Today in place of Fins and Feathers there is Pacific Fins which is a local operation utilizing the same resort Tim Choate had built. In addition, now there is Casa Viejo, Buena Vista and Sailfish Bay, plus numerous other startups offering different packages but all with fishing as the basis for their trips.
The fleet of boats has surged from the five Tim brought in to over 30 top notch sport fishing boats. The Captains who worked for Tim Choate at his Fins and Feathers resort are legendary, and most of them are running their own boats and setting new world records. All are doing well and everyone who fishes in Guatemala thanks Tim Choate for opening this market. This is Tim Choate's Legacy and Guatemala has a lot to thank Fins and Feathers for.
